Whether you’re just getting started or want to understand the legal landscape, we’ve compiled the most important things to know about gambling in Ontario. From regulation and game types to responsible gambling tools, it’s all right here.
Is Online Gambling Legal in Ontario?
Yes, online gambling in Ontario is legal. But PlayOLG.ca was the only properly regulated platform over the past seven years.
The company behind this platform is the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, which the government of Ontario owns.
It owned and managed numerous land-based casinos, so it was only typical to launch an online gambling platform.
This platform started with an online website but later incorporated a mobile app.
In other words, players who wanted to gamble on a licensed platform had to stick with this option.
On the 4th of April 2022, the government passed a new bill that allowed numerous iGaming brands onto the market.
Any online gambling operator that wishes to offer its services in the province will only need to reach an agreement with iGaming Ontario (iGO) to begin its operations. This is good news for players in Ontario, who will have even more legal online gambling sites to choose from.
Gambling Regulations in Ontario
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario administers all types of gambling in Ontario. As it became more evident that internet casinos and sports betting sites would be deemed legal by the government, iGaming Ontario was set up by AGCO.
This institution, a subsidiary of AGO, will be responsible for regulating and overseeing sports betting and online gambling websites.

Why Bet in Ontario?
Ontario’s online sports betting market is one of the most robust in North America. As of 2025, more than 28 legal operators are licensed by iGaming Ontario (iGO) or the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG).
- Safe & Regulated: Single-event betting, legalized in 2021, is monitored by the AGCO and iGO.
- Growing Market: Ontario’s iGaming market surpassed $500 million in revenue by March 2023, with new platforms entering regularly.
- Platform Diversity: From live, in-game betting to pre-match wagers, players have a wide range of licensed options.
Ontario Gambling: Online Vs Land-Based
Ontario offers both land-based casinos and regulated online platforms. Here’s how they compare:
- Land-Based: Offers a social experience and traditional atmosphere, but requires travel.
- Online: Accessible on desktop or mobile, with instant play, live dealer games, and advanced features that simulate real-time interaction.
While land-based casinos remain popular, online platforms offer unmatched convenience and variety, especially for players outside major urban centers.
Responsible Gambling for Players in Ontario
All licensed gambling operators in Ontario are required to implement responsible gambling tools and protect players from excessive or underage play. This includes:
- Self-exclusion options
- Deposit and time limits
- On-site resources about problem gambling
Failing to meet these standards can result in license suspension or revocation.
